Five simple ways to become more sustainable and thoughtful

Often it can be overwhelming to think about the impact we have on the environment and how we can make a positive difference. And a lot of the time we don’t even really think about this – and that’s not our fault. For most of us, our lives aren’t aligned to nature and our natural world which makes it difficult for us to think about how our actions affect our planet, other people and wildlife.

Practice mindfulness

This is the first step you should take. Being mindful of your actions and their impact on the world around you is an important part of changing habits. When we take time to think about what we’re doing and why, we make more sustainable choices. Slow down and consider what you’re doing and why – question yourself and the resources you use. Are they are necessary?

For example, do you really need to print an email, or can you simply read it on your computer? When we stop to reflect, whether it’s once a week, once a day or every time we do anything, our intentions and choices become more meaningful and considerate. Try to be more mindful when making your next decision and check in with yourself every few weeks.

Reduce your energy usage

One of the easiest ways to reduce your environmental impact is to conserve energy. This is as easy as:

  • switching off lights when you leave a room
  • turning the TV off from the screen (otherwise it stays on standby mode)
  • unplugging kitchen appliances when they’re not being used
  • charging your devices when the battery is extremely low or dead
  • using energy-efficient appliances and lightbulbs
  • choosing a hybrid or electric car
  • opting for public transport or carpooling.

Use reusable bags, containers and water bottles

Single-use plastic is a major contributor to pollution and waste. In fact, studies show that plastic breaks down into microplastics that enter our bloodstream. By bringing your own reusable bags when you go shopping, using a refillable water bottle, and opting for reusable containers, you can reduce your reliance on disposable plastics. What’s more, is that you probably already have a lot of these things.

  • Reuse the bags you’ve collected from shops, make a point to fold a few and keep them in your bag, pocket or car so that you always have them handy. The same goes for plastic water bottles and containers, you don’t need to go and buy anything new.
  • Reuse the bottle, jars and containers that you have before making a new purchase. And if you do need to dispose of them, ensure it’s recycled efficiently.

Using what you have to store other things that you may need is a great way to reduce your waste.

Build eco-friendly shopping habits

When you do need, or want, to make a purchase and go shopping, consider the environmental impact of the products you buy. Look for companies that prioritise sustainability in their manufacturing processes and packaging. How about looking for something online first?

  • Facebook marketplace, Gumtree, Shpock, Vinted and Ebay have some great items that are more eco friendly than new, and often cost a lot less.
  • Charity shops are also a good place to have a look first to see if you can find what you need.
  • Look for shops that offer refills and products with less packaging.

Educate yourself and others

The more we understand environmental issues and how our actions contribute to them, the more motivated we will be to make changes.

  • Read articles (like these) and books about sustainability.
  • Follow social media accounts of businesses, influencers and creators who are focused on sustainable ways of living. Follow Our Thoughtful Days on Instagram.
  • Talk to your friends and family about what you’ve learned.

By implementing these simple steps, starting with just one, in your daily routine, you can make a positive impact on the environment and become a more thoughtful and sustainable person. Together, we can work towards a more sustainable future for everyone. Move with intention and it will become easier to live in a more thoughtful way.
