In a previous blog about having a more sustainable and ethical Ramadan and Eid, I talked about rethinking Eidi; the traditional Eid gift given to children by elder family members. I wanted to share some more ideas that you can use to have a more eco friendly and sustainable Eid. Growing up, Eidi has usually been money from parents and relatives, but can also be toys or clothes. And though gifts are usually for children, adults get Eidi too, from their parents, friends and spouses. Money is less common and people opt for other gifts like watches, perfume, clothes etc.
As we try to become more sustainable and thoughtful, it’s a good time to change our gift giving. Here is a list of sustainable Eid gift ideas that you should consider for your loved ones:
- Handmade or DIY. Paintings, cards, candles, scarves, pottery, notebook filled with memories, table cloths, clothes…the list is endless when you have an imagination. And a handmade gift holds sentimental value so you know the receiver will love it.
- A tray of sweets. Impress loved ones with your culinary skills and give some baked goods, likes cookies or cakes in a lovely tin box that can be reused. I like to stuff dates with nuts or peanut butter and cover in a layer of chocolate for a delicious but healthy treat.
- Fruit and/or veg baskets are another easy gift that people will love. If there’s a local farmer’s market or shop near you, then that’s even better. You can find a variety of fruit to give to your loved ones.
- Plants in pots are a great gift and something that the receiver will be able to have for years to come. Potted plants are a better alternative to bouquets and cut flowers. Why not get someone a herbal plant or some tomatoes to grow?
- Donations in a loved ones name is a fantastic gift, and one I often give. Whether it’s to plant trees, build a well or support a family for a year, the receiver will benefit from the donation and whoever the donation supports.
- Ethical toiletries are also a crowd pleasing gift. You can find organic and natural soaps, lotions, shower gels, bathbombs and more easily at shops like Lush. Or opt for something homemade from a local market or art fair.
- Ethical candles are another good choice and easy to find with a quick search online or at a local fair. Look for ones that use paraben free or soya wax and come in jars that can be reused.
- Zamzam water in an ethical bottle (like Ocean Bottle) is a lovely gift that will keep on giving. You could even give Zamzam in a glass bottle you already have and decorate it.
- Wooden toys if you really do want to get a child something they can play with. Make sure it’s made from certified sustainable wood to prevent deforestation. Wooden toys are much more durable than plastic ones and they can be composted.
- Vouchers to spend in ethical stores like the Ethical Superstore. Alternatively, you can offer someone an experience, whether it’s scuba diving or a walking tour of a special place.
- Charity shopping can help you find some great items like books or jewellery that can be given as gifts. Not only is it helping a charity, but it’s helping reduce waste because it’s a second hand item.
- Minimal packaging and wrapping are a key component for a more sustainable Eid. Pick gifts that have the least wrapping and packaging, and if you are going to wrap your gifts avoid using glittery, plastic wrapping paper.
If we continue to advocate for more a sustainable lifestyle, we will improve the future of the earth, fulfil our duty as Muslims and find more peace. Let me know what some of your ideas are in the comments.
